osewalrusI have noticed a particular thing about creative arts. When you see someone throwing themselves entirely into the moment of music, or storytelling, or creation of poetry. There is an energy and an openness and vulnerability. Not always, of course. But I have observed it is often the difference between a good performance and a great performance. this is especially true if you see people really jamming and playing with each other. To open yourself to the highest level of creative energy and genius requires becoming vulnerable. It requires investing oneself in the effort.
Positive psychology refers to this as a "flow state." The moment when the individual becomes so engrossed in the activity that they lose all track of time and space. Musicians talk of feeling like the instrument is an extension of their body. I know in myself when I am in flow that the keyboard and monitor and hands and brain feel fused and in constant feedback loop and that hours can pass without noticing signs of hunger or thirst or need to use the bathroom.
