Yet another study that correlates the gender wage gap with the birth of children. This time from Denmark. Salaries for women with no children remain fairly steady and on par with men's salaries. But women take a major hit after the birth of a first child and never recover. By contrast, men's salaries are largely unaffected.

The *why* is much more problematic to understand. Denmark has government stipends for childcare so that it is fairly affordable (especially when compared to US standards). So mothers can afford to go back to work after maternity leave (one theory in the U.S. being that mothers simply cannot afford to work full time, or require flexible hours). Nevertheless, the problem persists.
