Basically, corporations tend to favor stuff they own. CBS is much more likely to keep a CBS produced program with worse ratings than a non-CBS produced show.
The author claims this trend has been going on for 10 years. Actually, it's 20. I wrote an article on this back in 2003, by which time the trend was firmly established. Not surprisingly, the rise of this trend aligns with the elimination of FCC rules prohibiting such vertical combinations and limiting horizontal ownership.
