Progressive: I love this late 19th/early 20th century author. [Discovers this author was a racist] Oh whoa! How can I distinguish the author's work from the foul opinions they held? How can I ever enjoy these books again? Does having enjoyed them mean that I, somewhere in the depth of my being, also harbor racist tendencies? How else could I have missed the racist subtext! <hand wring, hand wring, hand wring> 


Conservative: I love Taylor Swift! [Taylor Swift endorses democrats] I hate Taylor Swift! In fact, it turns out I have never loved Taylor Swift.

More Experienced Progressive: Hm, seems like practically *everyone* has/had *some* objectionable opinions. If I want to enjoy any media at all, I'll need to get better at separating the artist from the work.
