If you want to understand one of the reasons people never seem to learn, consider the following. If you predict a problem, explain what needs to be done to avert the problem, work to implement the solution, and successfully avert the problem, you do not gain a reputation for genius and competence. You gain a reputation as an alarmist to be ignored. 

Whatever exercise you did today is 10,000 times better than the perfect exercise you didn't do -- whatever your "helpful" friends, relatives or inner voice may say. This is true in many areas of life. It is also true, however, that "progress" is not the same as "problem solved."
